The College of Foreign Languages and Translation was established in conjunction with the Presidential Decree No. 245/1996 establishing Misr University for Science and Technology, stemming from the founders awareness of the importance and urgency of the study of foreign languages, especially amidst the rapid technological development in the means of communication and information transfer. From this juncture, the College of Foreign Languages and Translation was inaugurated to accomplish the task of preparing a distinguished translator capable of dealing with the rapid technical evolution through language and multi-purpose laboratories, which provide students with intensive training in simultaneous and consecutive interpretation. Furthermore, through developing the students potential in writing, reading, speaking and literature, the study in the college opens up countless fields for them in the national as well as the regional labor market. In addition, the undergraduate program offered by its multiple departments, the college has introduced postgraduate programs in the English, German and French departments in the fields of literature, linguistics and translation.
The college incorporates eleven scientific departments that grant a Bachelor degree in languages and translation equivalent to the Bachelor degree awarded by the faculties of Arts and Al-Alsun under the Supreme Council of Universities in Egypt.

Being deeply aware of the essential need for competent graduates in the field of foreign languages and translation, the founders of MUST inaugurated a B.A. program offered by the College of Foreign Languages and Translation, since the establishment of the university. The mission of the College of Languages and Translation is to prepare graduates who are qualified linguistically, cognitively and skillfully through their studies in the fields of language, translation and literature; the factors that enable them to join various labour market sectors including translation, teaching, tourism and media.
The College of Foreign Languages and Translation incorporates 11 academic departments: English Department, French Department, German Department, Italian Department, Spanish Department, Turkish Department, Chinese Department, Japanese Department, Arabic Department, Greek Department and Russian Department. This is in addition to the Persian language taught as a second language in both Arabic and Turkish Departments, as well as the Hebrew language taught as a second language in the Arabic Department. Each department is equipped with qualified staff members who have wide expertise in teaching and in the practical field of translation. Besides the undergraduate program, the college has inaugurated postgraduate programs in the English, German and French Departments in the fields of literature, linguistics and translation.
The various college departments offer a variety of activities that serve the community as well as interdisciplinary scholarships that develop innovative models for the study and assimilation of languages, literature, and translation. The educational programs in the college use a credit-hour system. The academic year is divided into three semesters: Fall (sixteen weeks), Spring (sixteen weeks) and Summer (eight weeks) including examinations. The credit-hour system is used to measure the number of credit hours that each student should complete prior to graduation. Each credit hour represents one hour of a weekly theoretical lecture or two hours of practice. The credit hours of each course appear in the study plans of each department.
Students enrolled in the College of Foreign Languages and Translation must successfully pass a total of 150 credit hours including university requirements, electives, faculty requirements, and specialization requirements. The courses taught comprise language skill courses, literature, and linguistics courses, as well as miscellaneous written and oral translation courses from into Arabic.
The college addresses the demands of the job market through expanding the courses and programs which promote students’ written and oral communication skills. Also, it prepares students to become specialized in both translation and interpretation fields. Graduates are also qualified to join the field of language instruction, content creation, copy-writing and other fields that depend on excelling in various languages.
The college adopts various learning strategies that match the nature of each program and course such as active and cooperative learning strategies. The college also uses research projects, presentations, and group discussions to encourage the use of modern technologies. For this purpose, the college provides learning facilities such as libraries, language labs, and available internet services. Besides, the college also endorses an e-learning system that facilitates the education process.
The Sector of Community Service and Environmental Development is considered the mirror of the faculty that reflects its image to the surrounding community. The mission of the sector stems from the university mission to contribute effectively to achieve social development; therefore, the faculty works to employ its human potential to serve the community, including the faculty community, and the university community, then the external community.
To achieve the faculty mission, the Sector of Community Service and Environmental Development aims to serve the community and improve the environment through:
– Developing the community role of the faculty as one of the important institutions in the field of languages, translation and literature by contributing to the process of intellectual enlightenment of the society.
– Providing appropriate conditions for the students and following up the graduates to acquire knowledge and skills related to the labor market.
– Investing human personnel in the academic departments to contribute to serve the community through their effective role.
– Contributing in solving social problems in the Egyptian society, especially the problems of young people and the development of their skills.
In order to implement these objectives, the Sector
– Conducts an awareness program on community service and environmental development activities for the faculty members and their assistants, students, employees, and community parties.
– Holds a cultural season represented in a number of seminars carried out by one of the faculty departments, or by more than one department so each one of them has its role in the seminars during the academic year.
– Cooperates with scientific centers and publishing houses specialized in publishing books and references for languages and translation to hold exhibitions in the university such as National Center for Translation, Longan and others.
– Follows-up graduates, helps them to find a good place in the labor market, and benefits from them after graduation.
– Contracts and activates various agreements held between the departments and other parties.
Promoting scientific research is one of the faculty missions as it complements the educational process and contributes to its development, either directly or indirectly to elevate it. First, scientific research creates communication channels among researchers, nationally, regionally and globally. Moreover, it reinforces the bonds between the university and the society when its outcomes are employed in all aspects of life; as well as, it promotes the faculty and university academic rank both nationally and internationally. These objectives can be achieved if scientific research in faculty and university programs is based on a scheduled and comprehensive research plan that includes a variety of disciplines in the context of enhancing interdisciplinary studies among the various majors of both the faculty and the university.
The Sector of Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research, in the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Translation is keen to foster competitive and international cooperation by instilling values such as the sense of belonging to the university, research independence, and scientific and ethical commitment based on a clear methodology. Such methodology cares about preparing scientific environment that motivates innovation to support researchers and invest creative, knowledgeable and scientific production to face the current and coming challenges to get the benefits from scientific and research potentials to support sustainable plans of development within the state national strategies for science and technology by 2030 in order to raise the standards of Egyptian society.
The role of the Postgraduate Studies in the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Translation is to transfer the foreign cultures to our Arabic one and transfer our Arabic culture to the other foreign cultures represented in the faculty. The faculty offers a Master degree in the German, English and French language programs in literature, linguistics, and translation majors. Studying these majors represents a cornerstone in knowing more about other peoples, learning and studying their languages, and thus achieving cultural communication and integration.
One of the major requirements of these postgraduate studies programs is submitting scientific theses and research papers that conform to the modern society and fulfil its needs for cultural, economical, political and intellectual knowledge and for all human aspects, as well. Thus, there lies the significance of human studies that opens the horizons before people to understand, create and innovate.
The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Translation is to be distinctive in the scientific research field in language, translation and literature majors; to be able to promote the scientific research in all fields and to achieve cultural and knowledgeable integration among its majors.
Postgraduate Studies Sector in the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Translation, Misr University for Science and Technology seeks to improve the creative and scientific skills which enrich either individual or collective scientific research, to enable the researchers to participate in producing knowledge for the sake of society sustainable development and to build bridges of communication with other cultures which get along with the period requirements.
The Sector of Education and Students Affairs, headed by the Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs, is responsible for all issues related to the student in terms of academic aspects and student activities since the students’ enrollment in faculty until graduation.
The activities and tasks of the Sector of Education and Students Affairs include:
-Receiving new students and distributing them to the faculty departments.
-Helping students choose the appropriate specialization.
-Working on students awareness of the university rules and regulations.
-Preparing and reviewing academic regulations in competence with the constant changes and requirements of the labor market.
– Educating students about academic guidance.
– Approving academic schedules and supervising the implementation of study plans.
-Supervising various student activities.
– Developing students’ skills.
– Working on providing various equipment needed for the educational process.
– Providing the appropriate environment for educational achievement and practical training in the faculty.
– Supervising the elections of Students Union in the faculty.
The College of Foreign Languages and Translation was established in 1998 to prepare its students, through instructional courses of theory and practice, to be distinctive and competent translators who can cope with the rapid technological developments.
